Using Glandular Extracts for Stress and Adrenal Fatigue

fatigued adrenal glandsI saw early in my clinical work that most people suffering from adrenal fatigue need more than just lifestyle changes and alterations in their food intake. Normally, good quality food is the best source of these nutrients, but once depleted, the adrenals need more than diet alone is likely to provide. I found, clinically, that supplementing with specific concentrated nutrients markedly increased my patients’ ability to strengthen adrenal function and recover their health.

I began using adrenal extracts with my patients with adrenal fatigue and found that they slowly improved over time, but their progress was too slow for my liking, no matter which adrenal concentrate they took. However, by combining concentrated, hormone-free extracts of the glands most involved in the stress response, we were able to achieve much better outcomes than we had using them singly. I started adding specific nutrients one at a time, and through trial and error discovered that most people suffering from adrenal fatigue and similar stress related health problems need much more of some nutrients than others. As nutrient after nutrient was added, people began responding and recovering more and more quickly, and then recovering more fully. Over time, it became apparent that most people with adrenal fatigue need the same nutrients, only varying in quantity depending upon severity. The more severe the adrenal fatigue, the more of these specific nutrients they needed to sustain themselves, function well and recover fully. The glandular extracts work so deeply that it usually takes several weeks, or even months, to notice their effects, but these effects are profound and form the foundation for lasting results.

All of our glandular extracts come from natural-feed pigs. Obtaining these extracts from a porcine (pig) rather than bovine (cow) source eliminates concerns about prions or BSE (mad cow disease) because there are no known porcine sources of prions. The glandulars come directly from animals inspected by independent veterinarians and raised for food consumption without chemicals, antibiotics, growth hormones, pellet food, forced feeding, overcrowding, or any of the other inhumane methods often associated with commercial animal husbandry. The glandular tissues used in Adrenal Rebuilder have been processed to remove the hormones and steroids (a type of adrenal hormone) that may be naturally present in these glands. This formula provides natural building blocks that support optimal adrenal function so that the adrenal glands themselves can produce healthy amounts of the adrenal hormones as needed.

Recently, I consulted with a nurse practitioner in integrative medicine, and based on test results that showed just below normal morning to noon cortisol, she suggested Dr. Wilson’s Super Adrenal Stress Formula and Adrenal Rebuilder. I have been aware of having adrenal fatige for about 6 or 7 years, maybe longer. Anyway, I do like the Stress Formula vitamin, but was very hesitant about the glandular. I have a sensitive system. In place of that, I tried a tablet that just had 80mg of bovine glandular and some B vitamins. I took half and was way too nervous and this gave me a nervous stomach. (I know this one does not have the hormones removed.) I guess what I’m wondering is if it is necessary to take glandulars to get well of adrenal fatigue or if herbs would work. I have actually been taking various herbs and many vitamins and supplements for a long time, so I’m familiar with most if not all of the herbs used for adrenal fatigue.
    Thank you,
    Camille

    • Hi Camille,

We’re glad you like the Super Adrenal Stress Formula. To answer your question, the glandular extracts, the vitamins, and herbs all work in different ways. While many people benefit from taking any of Doctor Wilson’s Original Formulations by themselves or combined with some of the other products, the products are designed to work together and be taken simultaneously for maximum adrenal support. The Adrenal Rebuilder is processed to remove hormones, so even having a sensitive system you may have a better reaction to this than a bovine glandular extract which still contains hormones that you had tried. The vitamins and herbs help support the functioning of the adrenal glands, however the glandular extracts are designed specifically to help structurally fortify and promote healthy, normal glands.

      We hope this information helps!

    Hello,
I just found your website and I have some questions. I have not been diagnosed with adrenal fatugue but I believe that is what I have, based on my symptoms. I had a total hysterectomy at age 28 (I am now 63). I have had much stress due to family issues, financial and husband with cancer, plus I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and high blood pressure. I truly am exhausted and I am trying to take care of myself. I go to a holistic M.D. and she says to take Rhodiola Rosea for adrenals. I have tried but I get so tired after taking that I cannot function. She said to try to take it before bedtime which I will try.Can Dr. Wilson’s adrenal extract help me? Can i take with high BP?

    • Hi Diana,

If adrenal fatigue is what you’re dealing with, you could see some benefit from Dr. Wilson’s adrenal fatigue supplements. As far as the supplements go: if you have high blood pressure, you should consider the licorice-free version of the Herbal Adrenal Support Formula, which is called Herbal HPA. Dr. Wilson’s extract formula, Adrenal Rebuilder, is processed to remove hormones, so shouldn’t cause issues with blood pressure. With any health issues, it’s a good idea to check with your healthcare practitioner before adding any supplements to your daily regimen. More information on Adrenal Rebuilder, including ingredients, can be found here: http://www.adrenalfatigue.org/product-qa/qa-adrenal-rebuilder
Hope this helps – thanks for your question!

Can these extracts still be taken by people who have a higher than normal night time Cortisol levels?

    • Hi Michael,

If the adrenal glands need support, the glandular extracts in Dr. Wilson’s Adrenal Rebuilder can be used. The instances when these glandular extracts would not be ideal would be in Addison’s or Cushing’s Disease, which are life-threatening conditions.

Hope this helps – thanks for your question!

    Hi,
You stated that the Adrenal Rebuilder would not be recommandable in Addison’s disease? Is that correct? I suffer from Addison’s and I thought this could help. As far as I understood from Dr. Wilson’s book, these are supposed to help in my condition. Why do you say it wouldn’t? I’m all mixed up…
I haven’t tried it yet cause I’m vegan and I’m hesitating… Can the glandular extracts help or not in Addison’s?
    Thanks,
    Monica

    • Hi Monica,

Addison’s is a much more serious condition than adrenal fatigue, and often requires assistance from a healthcare practitioner. It may be possible to supplement treatment with a glandular extract supplement and other formulas, but only under a practitioner’s supervision. Many of the diet and lifestyle recommendations Dr. Wilson provides in his book can be beneficial, though with Addison’s it’s best to double check with your practitioner. I hope this helps to clear up the confusion!
